Creation Myth of Hermopolis

" In the beginning featureless water covered the earth which contained eight primeval deities called the 'Ogdoad'. The Ogdoad comprised of four frog headed gods and their four snake headed goddess consorts. These deities were:
Nun and Nunet - primal waters
Heh and Hehet - infinity/flood force
Kek and Keket - darkness
Amun and Amunet - hideness, unseen and air. Amun had the power to change the nature of the water.
From the formless water a cosmic egg was formed. This egg was either laid by the great spirit in the form of a goose called 'great cackler' or was brought by Thoth in his Ibis form.
When the egg hatched it caused a mound of earth to rise from the water known as 'isle of flame'. The egg contained the god Ra as a bird of light, or as some beleived it contained the air that separates the sky and earth.
Henceforward the Ogdoad were responsible for the ebb and flow of the Nile and the rising of the sun. Amun became worshipped as the primary creator god especially in thebes and was often equated with Ra, thus Amun-Ra."
